web servers
Our Apache web servers are load balanced across four front hosts. These servers also handle DNS requests.
untrusted network
When requests come in from the internet, they are first routed via our “untrusted network” (red). Our application servers and database servers are never exposed to this network.
application servers
Our Tomcat application servers handle requests for dynamic JSP content via the semi trusted network.
semi-trusted network
Requests from the web servers for dynamic content, are routed via our “semi-trusted network” (yellow) to our application servers. No database servers are exposed to this network.
database servers
Located on our trusted network, the MySQL database servers handle requests from the application servers. Databases are replicated across multiple servers to ensure that runtime data is never lost.
trusted network
Behind the application servers, the “trusted” network (green) is physically separate to the untrusted and semi-trusted networks. It is never directly connected to the Internet.
admin hosts & vpn
All servers in our data centre are directly connected to our admin hosts, accessible via a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) - enabling remote administration.
firewalls
Firewalls are in place to protect every network interface on every server within our data centre.
